Your fermenter is where beer happens. Everything from the moment the wortWort Liquid extracted from malted grain during mashing and boiling, before fermentation. The starting point for beer. goes in to the moment it's ready to package takes place here — so it's worth understanding what to look for before you buy one.
The PP bucket fermenter
Many fermenter types exist: glass carboys, stainless conicals, PET vessels, and various DIY options. BrewClub uses a polypropylene (PP) bucket fermenter for good reason.

Choosing your size

Headspace matters. Fermentation produces a foam layer called krausenKrausen The thick, rocky foam layer that forms on top of fermenting wort during active fermentation. Produced by CO₂ rising through the liquid and carrying proteins, hop compounds, and yeast cells to the surface. Krausen typically peaks within the first 24–72 hours of fermentation and then falls back into the beer as activity slows. It is normal and harmless. The fermenter needs enough headspace to accommodate it — typically at least 20% of the batch volume — or it can push out through the airlock. that rises above the liquid surface. For most BrewClub batches, the 15-litre fermenter is the most versatile choice. It covers everything from a 4-person FWKFresh Wort Kit Ready-made wort produced by a professional brewery and packaged for home fermentation. Supplied concentrated — typically at 15 litres — with the option to dilute up to 20 litres. The brewer handles everything from fermentation onwards: sanitising, pitching yeast, dry hopping, and packaging. Removes the mashing and boiling steps entirely. Currently only available in 15–20 litre minimum volumes, making small-batch brewing a challenge without splitting. split (5 L each) up to a solo 10-litre batch. If you're starting with a single 4-litre batch and don't expect to scale up, the 5.5-litre fermenter is the right fit and costs less.

CO-PPPP — Polypropylene A semi-crystalline polyolefin plastic widely used in fermenter buckets, lids, taps, and airlocks. Excellent chemical resistance across all homebrewing chemical environments. EU Regulation 10/2011 compliant. (copolymer polypropylene) is a chemically robust food-safe plastic — the same material family as the bucket, with slightly better impact resistance. Silicone is the correct material for tap washers in brewing: food-safe, chemically inert, long-lasting, and compatible with all sanitisers and cleaning agents. Cleaning and inspection
Before your first brew and between batches, your fermenter needs to be cleaned — not just sanitised. Cleaning removes residue; sanitising kills anything that could spoil the beer. Both steps matter and they are done in sequence: clean first, then sanitise on brew day.
The cleaning process is covered in detail on the Brew Day page. For now, the things to know:
- Inspect your fermenter before each brew. Look for scratches, cracks, or cloudiness — especially on the interior. Scratches harbour bacteria that cleaning and sanitising can't reliably reach. A heavily scratched fermenter should be replaced.

- Disassemble the tap and clean it separately after every batch. The tap interior is the highest-risk residue point in the whole setup.
