The FermZilla is appropriate for fermentation (where yeast consumes oxygen actively) and for conditioning up to several weeks. For indefinite storage of finished, oxygen-sensitive beer, stainless is the more conservative choice.
Lid ring — GR engineering plastic, inferred POK
KegLand describes the lid ring as "glass-reinforced engineering plastics — not only chemical resistant, heat resistant but also tough." This description is consistent with GR-POKPOK — Polyketone An engineering thermoplastic used in current KegLand DuoTight push-fit fittings and the RAPT Pill body. Replaced POM due to POM's vulnerability to acid-catalysed degradation under WDC conditions. A-rated for all homebrewing chemicals.→ Full details (glass-reinforced polyketone) — the material KegLand uses across their engineering plastic components, including DuoTight collars. Formal confirmation from KegLand EU has been requested and is pending.
Lid O-ring — pending confirmation
The lid O-ring is the most analytically significant unknown in this equipment. It is the primary pressure seal; it contacts wortWort Liquid extracted from malted grain during mashing and boiling, before fermentation. The starting point for beer. and beer during fermentation; and it contacts ABNSABNS — Acid-Based No-Rinse Sanitiser The class of acid-based sanitisers used in homebrewing, combining phosphoric acid with an anionic alkylbenzenesulfonate surfactant. KegLand states that all units manufactured after 01/01/2023 have the current brown O-ring as standard, described as "newer material that is softer and easier to fit."1 The brown colour and "softer" description are consistent with LOW2 or EPDMEPDM — Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer A saturated-backbone elastomer rubber used in fermenter grommets and tap washers. Better chemical resistance than NR or SBR. Rated B for DDBSA in realistic homebrewing use with post-batch cleaning. compounding. It is not described as silicone, and the description does not match the yellow LOW2 material used in Cornelius keg lids.
Working assumption: treat as LOW2 or EPDMEPDM — Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer A saturated-backbone elastomer rubber used in fermenter grommets and tap washers. Better chemical resistance than NR or SBR. Rated B for DDBSA in realistic homebrewing use with post-batch cleaning. until confirmed. Both are manageable for normal brewing use. Neither warrants any process change before confirmation. If the O-ring material is confirmed as NRNR — Natural Rubber Vulcanised latex of Hevea brasiliensis. Used in budget grommets and washers. Carries N-nitrosamine precursor risk from sulphur-cure accelerators — invisible to inspection. Replace immediately with EPDM. (which would be inconsistent with a pressure fermentation vessel specification but cannot be excluded without confirmation), immediate replacement would be required.
Inspect the lid O-ring at every brew. It should be supple, seated evenly in its groove, and free of cracking or permanent deformation. Replace annually regardless of apparent condition — it is a consumable under compressive load.
StellarSan storage — confirmed safe
StellarSan (working-dilution ABNSABNS — Acid-Based No-Rinse Sanitiser The class of acid-based sanitisers used in homebrewing, combining phosphoric acid with an anionic alkylbenzenesulfonate surfactant. The US retailer guidance that stated "one hour maximum" was incorrect and has been superseded. KegLand's own documentation is the authoritative source.
BlowTie spunding valve
The BlowTie is a diaphragm-type spunding valve with integrated pressure gauge. The body is POKPOK — Polyketone An engineering thermoplastic used in current KegLand DuoTight push-fit fittings and the RAPT Pill body. Replaced POM due to POM's vulnerability to acid-catalysed degradation under WDC conditions. A-rated for all homebrewing chemicals.→ Full details — confirmed, A-rated. The diaphragm material is unconfirmed (pending KegLand EU). In normal use the BlowTie contacts CO₂ gas only; beer contact occurs only in the event of suck-back during an over-pressure event. The gas-contact-only path reduces the practical significance of the diaphragm material for most uses.
Dip tube — silicone
Silicone is B-rated for ABNSABNS — Acid-Based No-Rinse Sanitiser The class of acid-based sanitisers used in homebrewing, combining phosphoric acid with an anionic alkylbenzenesulfonate surfactant. The acid creates a low-pH environment hostile to microorganisms; the surfactant disrupts cell membranes. Examples: Star San, Sanipro Rinse, StellarSan, Chemsan. A-rated for all common homebrewing plastic and elastomer materials at working concentrations. at 40°C for 30 minutes is the upper limit; StellarClean at cold-to-warm temperature with extended soak is the more practical choice for PETPET — Polyethylene terephthalate The plastic used in the FermZilla All Rounder, Oxebar mini keg, and PET bottles. Recycling code ♻️1. Extensively tested for food contact with carbonated beverages. Do not exceed 40 °C when cleaning.. See cleaning for the rationale.
Cleaning protocol:
- Immediate rinse post-fermentation — add 2–3 L cold water, swirl, drain via carbonation cap. Do this before the equipment cools.
- StellarClean at warm temperature (≤40°C), fill to ~5 L, soak 15–20 minutes, shake gently. No abrasive cleaning inside the PETPET — Polyethylene terephthalate The plastic used in the FermZilla All Rounder, Oxebar mini keg, and PET bottles. Recycling code ♻️1. - Drain through the liquid carbonation cap. Rinse thoroughly with water until pH-neutral.
- Inspect the lid O-ring while disassembled.
- Sanitise and store with ABNSABNS — Acid-Based No-Rinse Sanitiser The class of acid-based sanitisers used in homebrewing, combining phosphoric acid with an anionic alkylbenzenesulfonate surfactant. The 120 mm lid opening allows a soft cloth or long-handled soft brush; the wide opening is a genuine design advantage over narrow-neck fermenters.
Pressure vessel service life
The FermZilla is rated to 2.5 bar. Pressure capability is a function of the vessel integrity and the lid seal. Service life depends on:
- Lid O-ring condition: inspect and replace annually, or on any sign of deformation, cracking, or visible distress. A failed lid O-ring during pressure fermentation means loss of pressure and potentially a carbonation loss event, not a safety hazard at homebrewing pressures — but it is an avoidable failure.
- Vessel inspection: check for scratches, crazing, or discolouration of the PETPET — Polyethylene terephthalate The plastic used in the FermZilla All Rounder, Oxebar mini keg, and PET bottles. Recycling code ♻️1. Extensively tested for food contact with carbonated beverages. Do not exceed 40 °C when cleaning. at each cleaning. A scratched interior should prompt replacement — scratches increase microplastic release and create biofilm harbourage.
